This was the first of the two Winter Wanders to Grasmere, the other one taking place in February, 1999.

I think we had some kind of special arrangement with the warden at the hostel which meant it was a free stay or at least reduced cost.

Judging by the photographs there was some nice, crisp winter weather for the Saturday walk.

Autumn again and back to Grasmere and Thorney How for Wayne’s Wanderers.

Judging by the photographs this was the infamous ‘down Swirral and up Striding’ weekend in which we went up Helvellyn then down Swirral Edge and back up via Striding Edge (or was it the other way around). Either way, it was a long time ago.

The first Wander of 1996 saw the Wanderers heading to Whitby for a weekend on the East coast.

The photographs seem to indicate a walk to Robin Hood’s Bay but there’s also clearly some Abbey visiting going on.

When in Whitby, do as the tourists do.

June 1995, the inaugural Wander, which involved not one but two hostels – Patterdale on the Friday night, never to be visited again and the now legendary Thorney How which has been visited many times since. Looking at the Patterdale hostel photograph below you can probably see why we never went back…
