In something of a departure from our usual pattern of heading North for the autumn Wander, 2017 saw us heading Westwards into Shropshire for a weekend at Wilderhope Manor, situated in the Shropshire Hills, close to the Long Mynd.
Wilderhope is an Elizabethan manor house, miles from anywhere, but fortunately, cosy enough for a couple of evenings spent sampling the local beer and other victuals.
On the Saturday, in weather which defiantly refused to do what the weather forecast predicted it would, we headed doggedly up the Long Mynd starting at Church Stretton and taking in a wide circular route, back via Little Stretton. The weather did start to clear later on, but most of the day was pretty minging, with pretty heavy rain near the top.
En route, we encountered a couple of horses with a persistent liking for apples – one of them friendly to us, but pretty hostile to his mate who got chased off – it’s dog eat dog on the Long Mynd.
You can view the route for the walk here and also a video playback here.
In the evening, primarily due to the lack of anything else nearby, we stayed at the hostel for an evening of beer, crisps, whisky, wine and Trivial Pursuit (Family Edition, no less).
See you in 2018 and Wander On!
