For the mid-year Wander of 2017, we decided that a trip to Scarborough was in order, so July saw us heading to the North Yorkshire coast for a mini-summer holiday and a weekend of coast walks and castle visits.
The hostel itself is situated in a secluded spot slightly outside the town alongside the nautically named river Sea Cut, near the Burniston bridge. Nice location, sadly no WiFi or mobile signal – the horror, the horror.
On the Saturday, we opted to head north along the coast path with a rough goal of getting to Hayburn Wyke and returning via a track along a disused railway. The obvious advantage of the Hayburn Wyke destination being of course the Hayburn Wyke Hotel where we stopped off for a refreshing pint before heading back along the aforementioned railway.
The original intent was to walk all the way back, however, once we’d reached Burniston, the temptation to hop on a bus back to Scalby was too much, so that’s what we did. From there it was just a short trek back to the hostel via more refreshments at a nearby caravan site.
You can view the route for the walk here and also a video playback here. (Including the bus journey…)
On the Sunday, we walked up to the castle from the North Bay, offering great views of the whole town and the coast to the north and south (more of which later), followed by Fish & Chips in a downpour on the Old Harbour.
Wander On!
