So off we went to the Lakes again for the annual Autumn Wander and a thoroughly good time was had by all. Elterwater is now an independent hostel and I think probably a bit better than your bog standard YHA as a result, with some great food on offer.
In some ways this was quite a ‘musical’ weekend with renditions of old music hall numbers by Tom with random harmonica accompaniment and freeform rainstick pieces with tribal chanting and groaning. Of course during the night there were many other random noises in the dorm room but the less said about that the better…
The walk on Saturday started with an intent to climb Wetherlam then Swirl How and possibly back via the Old Man of Coniston but in the end was truncated to just a stroll up to the summit of Wetherlam due to very low cloud preventing pretty much any chance of a view. Compasses were in fact needed on the way back and we still managed to lose the path. Thanks go to Dave for navigating us back down again.
Both evenings were spent at the Britannia Inn with its interesting and constantly changing selection of local beers – favourites were the Britannia Gold and the Neddy Boggle Bitter.
See you next time and wander on…
