Winter is coming

Capel Curig, March 2008 – the first time back in North Wales since Pen-y-Pas in 1997 and a bit of a wet one to say the least. Man, did it rain on this weekend! This may actually be one of the only trips where we abandoned the walk and hightailed it back to the hostel. The drying room could barely cope.

We set off on the Saturday in pretty decent weather (after the usual faffing around) with the intention of climbing Tryfan from Llyn Ogwen, but by the time we were at the pass between Glyder Fach and Tryfan things had taken a turn for the worst. Rain, sleet, snow and fog all rolled in and we decided to abandon the summit.

The objective then became the warm environs of Capel Curig hostel but for some reason we decided to walk back and collect the cars later. This turned out to be a mistake and on the way it started raining even more, without any pretence at sleet or snow. GoreTex jackets and boots didn’t stand a chance but eventually we made it back.

This was also the weekend when Tom borrowed my extra large shoes to go and collect the cars – they were cheap that’s all I can say on the matter…
