Slimbridge June 1998

We pedalled some bikes away

Back in the early days, when we used to venture outside of Derbyshire for the Summer Wander, we headed down to Slimbridge for the Wander of June 1998.

The hostel is situated next to the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal in the Slimbridge Wetlands Centre.

This weekend is notable for the presence of one Fiona Allen, comedian of Smack the Pony fame, latterly of Coronation Street, who took one look at the hostel accommodation, failed to see the comedy in it and proceeded to check into the hotel across the road forthwith.

Apparently she wasn’t too keen on the sleeping arrangements, preferring the privacy of her own room, but each to their own. I can’t remember why she was there now – friend of a friend or something like.

This was also the weekend when we hired bikes from the delightfully named Pedal-a-Bike-Away in the Forest of Dean. Having hired our bikes, we proceeded to pedal them away for a day’s cycling in the forest.
